Wonderful World of Disney?

Disney's Damsels

A while back, a friend of mine and I were discussing the impact of Disney on the realities of relationships. It seems, to us, that a lot of women have something of a fairy-tale scenario in mind when it comes to dating and we wondered how much of that is due to having watched shows/movies, like from Disney, growing up where the Princess is somehow “saved” by her chosen prince. As you can see in this pic, Disney’s damsels can also be interpreted in a negative manner. Let’s examine.

Scott Pilgrim…

Posted by and1grad on July 27, 2010

vs THE WORLD!!

Although I’ve never seen or heard of this comic before the movie previews started, I think this is an extremely interesting concept. What if you have to fight your prospective lady’s exes in order to be with her?

Would you? Lets say you only had to fight the ones that were currently single. That STILL could be a daunting task. I mean, she would HAVE TO be exceptional right? And preferably, not have a ton of BFs I guess. There HAS to be a point where you’d be like “Fuck this, bitch you stayin single,” right?

“Girl, I love you and all but…Kimbo Slice? Maybe we should just be friends.”

Rx: TNT cont…

Posted by and1grad on September 9, 2008

I forgot to mention one of the movies that I had the pleasure of watching on TNT…HEAT!! I had forgotten just how great this movie is. Another extended cast of bonafides and heavy hitters. Loved the interaction b/w Pacino (Vincent) & DeNiro (Neil).

Vincent: You know, we are sitting here, you and I, like a couple of regular fellas. You do what you do, and I do what I gotta do. And now that we’ve been face to face, if I’m there and I gotta put you away, I won’t like it. But I tell you, if it’s between you and some poor bastard whose wife you’re gonna turn into a widow, brother, you are going down.
Neil: There is a flip side to that coin. What if you do got me boxed in and I gotta put you down? Cause no matter what, you will not get in my way. We’ve been face to face, yeah. But I will not hesitate. Not for a second.
Vincent: Maybe that’s the way it’ll be…Or, who knows?
Neil: Or maybe we’ll never see each other again.

Rx: TNT

Posted by and1grad on September 8, 2008

Its rare that I watch TNT when its not basketball season but they SAVED my Saturday this weekend. I’ve been sick the last couple of days and I spent most (read: all) of Saturday on my back and the only thing keeping me from being miserable was TNT’s lineup of quality movies. I FINALLY got to see all of Saving Private Ryan. I was surprised at how many bonafide stars and top notch actors were in this movie. Everytime I see Tom Hanks in a movie, I’m reminded of just how BRILLIANT an actor he is. He might be the best of our generation. Think about it…the guy made you care that he couldnt save a volleyball in Castaway.
Wilson - Castaway
I also got to see the end of 300…which I love as my favorite ‘roid rage movie. If there’s a movie that makes you wanna go lift weights more than 300, I’ve yet to see it. Everytime I see it, I wanna do push ups. The end of that movie is also my favorite part of it. The “Remember Us” speech.
Dilios 300
“Remember us.” As simple an order as a king can give. “Remember why we died.” For he didn’t wish tribute or song. No monuments, no poems of war and valour. His wish was simple: “Remember us,” he said to me. That was his hope. Should any free soul come across that place, in all the countless centuries yet to be, may all our voices whisper to you from the ageless stones: Go tell the Spartans, passer-by, that here, by Spartan law, we lie. So my king died, and my brothers died, barely a year ago. Long I pondered my king’s cryptic talk of victory. Time has proven him wise, for from free Greek to free Greek the word was spread that bold Leonidas and his 300, so far from home, laid down their lives, not just for Sparta, but for all Greece and the promise this country holds. Now, here on this ragged patch of Earth called Plataea, Xerxes’ hordes face obliteration! Just there, the barbarians huddle, sheer terror gripping tight their hearts with icy fingers, knowing full well what merciless horrors they suffered at the swords and spears of 300. Yet they stare now across the plain at 10,000 Spartans commanding 30,000 free Greeks! Haroo! The enemy outnumber us a paltry three to one; good odds for any Greek. This day we rescue a world from mysticism and tyranny, and usher in a future brighter than anything we could imagine. Give thanks, men! To Leonidas, and the brave 300! To victory!

If you cant get up for a speech that was delivered as well as THAT one was, well…you werent breathing to begin with. That part where he goes “Now, here on this ragged patch of Earth…,” I turn the volume up to “piss the neighbors off.” They understand.

Lastly, I caught the majority of We Were Soldiers. Another excellent movie starring another fantastic actor, Mel Gibson. One thing I really dug about this movie was the depiction of the wives left at home, how they interacted, and were forced to deal with the ongoing possibility or reality of news of their loved ones not coming back home to them. I also liked the depiction of the enemy.

I think I spent the rest of Saturday either in a state of delirium or asleep. Thanks TNT for making at least part of my Saturday NOT completely miserable!!

X Files 2

Posted by and1grad on July 26, 2008

X-files 2
So I went and saw X Files 2 last night. It was alright. About what I was expected. Except for the relationship b/w Scully & Mulder but I liked their interactions, as always. I’d say it’s worth seeing but not necessarily in theaters. In fact, I’m reminded of why I’m kind of over movie theaters in general. The only thing I really appreciated about the theater is that the sound system is so on point. Mine does alright tho.

EDIT: Forgot to mention, it turns out that was not Ja Rule but Xzibit. The X to the Z…given the movie it is, ok. Besides, he did a solid job.

X-cited

Posted by and1grad on July 23, 2008

I’m excited about this new X-files movie…even though its like 5 years too late…and it has Ja Rule in it. Ja Rule, really? What, was Ludacris taken? Well, whatever. Is anyone else excited about this movie? I’m more pumped for this than Batman, which I’ll see on Blu-Ray soon enough. That Stepbrothers movie looks funny tho. It’ll eat at X files’ sales for sure.
